Who has the last name Stokes?

Based on my research, I've found that most individuals with the surname Stokes either have white ancestry from various areas of the United Kingdom or black ancestry derived from the slave trade in the British colonies and the United States. Keep in mind, though, that nothing stops anyone from having babies with whomever they please! I've seen Stokeses with first names that are clearly of Spanish/Latin American origin or Asian origin, so just because the "first" Stokeses came from Europe, people of all backgrounds share the name now.

How Many Stokes Families are There?

DNA research done by the Stokes DNA Project (this site is not affiliated with the project or with any DNA testing company) has shown that there are 8 main Stokes families with many "independent" Stokes families. The independents could be whole families that have not yet been identified by a sufficient number of DNA submissions (at the time I am writing this, I believe they have received only 64), they could have different DNA as a result of an unknown adoption, or they could have different DNA because one of their female ancestors was "fooling around." ;)

These 8 families are just the ones that have been positively identified as being completely, or mostly, unrelated to each other. There are probably a number of other families as well. "Stoke" is one of the most common place names in the United Kingdom—in fact, that's what it means—"place"! Wikipedia lists over 30 individual locations that use the name "Stoke"-something. Anyone from these places could have taken (or been assigned!) the surname Stokes, de Stoke, de Stokes, De Stokke, etc.

Y-DNA Haplogroups

Because surname genealogy is done on the male line, Y-DNA Haplogroups are used. These groups are established based on an analysis of the y-chromosome. Men who have the same haplotype share a common geographic and ethnic history. Of course, in the last few centuries, this starts to mean less as people of all ancestries spread out across the globe!

What If I'm Female?

Only men can be tested because the test is done on the male line. So all of the female Stokes (of which I am one), must find a male blood relative in the Stokes line in order to be tested. If your father is a Stokes then he, your brothers, your father's father, and your father's brothers can be tested. If your mother is a Stokes, then her father or brothers can be tested. Keep in mind, if you are female, your sons cannot be tested, they will not possess the Stokes haplotype (unless your mate happens to possess it as well) because you cannot pass it to them, they get their y-chromosome exclusively from their father.

If you are female and none of these relatives are living, don't despair! If you can reliably trace your ancestry back at least 3 generations, chances are that there is a male somewhere who is in your blood line! Maybe even just down the road!

Can I Figure Out Which Group I'm In If I Don't Get Tested?

If you have a reliable family history that goes back several generations then yes, you probably can figure out which group you're in. If you can place one of your male ancestors into one of the groups that has already been defined, then you don't need to get tested, you'll already know which group you're in.

How Much Does It Cost?

There are several levels of teeting available, depending on how much information you want. I've seen prices ranging from $99 to $300. In my opinion, if you're going to spend the money to get tested, just test everything—it's easier than going back and testing again later on. But if you're on a limited budget, I believe the recommended test is about $150. Again, this site is not affiliated with the Stokes DNA Project or with any DNA testing company, so I can't make any specific recommendation.

What are the Primary Stokes Haplogroups?

This data is as provided by the Stokes DNA Project. The main Haplogroups they have identified for Stokes families are: I1, R1b1b2a1b, R1b1b2, R1b1b2a1a, and R1a1. You can view the lineages in each group at The Stokes DNA Project: Patriarchs.
